Details
MAGDALENE COLLEGE 1. 942 Pepys Building (Formerly listed as Pepysian Library) TL 4459 15/273 26.4.50. I 2. Built between 1670 and 1703, a highly remarkable classical building of the date with contemporary staircases and the bookcases presented by Samuel Pepys. The West front is ashlar faced, the rest brick with stone dressings. 3 storeys, attic and cellar. Main five-bay frontage. Tiled roof. Central open arcade with five semi-elliptical arches with, Doric, Roman Doric and Ionic pilasters. The entablature has painted 'Bibliotheca Pepysiana, 1724', the date the library was moved there and not of the building. There are two open staircases on either side of the arcade. The interior was altered in the C19 but still contains two original staircases and a fireplace surround. There are also C18 doors and panelling, and other features from the C18 and C19. The Pepy's Library contains his twelve bookcases of 1666, with his books, and his writing desk. (RCHM)
