II
Alcove set in roadside bank opposite a spring. 1850 or 51 by Joseph Bonomi II, Egyptologist,second son of Joseph Bonomi the architect for Dr. John Lee of Hartwell House Stone and brick with stucco imitating ashlar. Rubble stone flank walls and two square piers supporting a simple entablature. Frieze with Egyptian hieroglyphics said to record its building in the 13th year of Queen Victoria. Blocking course formerly had a parapet with Greek inscription meaning 'water is best'.
