Details

BROADWOODWIDGER SX 49 SW 6/40 Nethercott Farmhouse - GV II Farmhouse. Circa late C17 with minor C19 alterations and a small C20 rear addition. Rendered colourwashed cob with a slate roof gabled at ends, formerly thatched. 2 chimneys with brick shafts, one at the left gable end, one axial. Small 3 room and through passage house with the hall heated from a stack backing on to the passage, an unheated inner room possibly used as a dairy and a lower end room which may have been unheated originally but which was used as a heated parlour in the C19. The stairs run behind a partition at the rear of the hall. In the circa late C19 the hall was enlarged by a single-storey lean-to and the garden front refenestrated. In the late C20 a brick lean-to was added at the front of the lower end room. 2 storeys. 3- window garden elevation (the rear of the C17 house) with a late C19/early C20 glazed gabled porch to the left leading into the through passage and a half-glazed door to the right leading into the dairy. Regular fenestration of late C19/early C20 4-pane sashes and casement windows with glazing bars. Interior The former front door, now within the C20 lean-to, is a circa late C17 studded 3 plank door in an old doorframe. The hall fireplace has stone rubble jambs and a timber lintel. The remains of a C19 plank dado on the hall wall opposite the fireplace continues into the lean-to extension to the hall. The lower end chimney piece is C19 with a reeded surround. Inner room not inspected but said to have a forked cross beam supported on a post (Alcock). The interior of the house is very unaltered since the late C19. Alcock, MS notes on Broadwoodwidger Parish.
