5/41 Rose Cottage -

GV II

Cottage. Core probably C18, C20 addition and thorough renovations in progress at time of survey (1985). Whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings with a thatched roof gabled at the left end, left end stack, rear wing C20 in concrete block with thatched roof. One of a pair of cottages said formerly to have been 3 properties, the original plan may have been a single-cell cottage to the left, the right-hand end may have been one half of a 2-cell cottage. The present plan is single depth with a rear wing, prior to the 1985 renovations the main range consisted of a living room/kitchen at the left end and a smaller unheated room to the right, the internal partition between the rooms has been removed. 2 storeys. Approximately symmetrical 2-window front with a C20 thatched porch in the centre. Ground floor window left is a C20 casement; right, a 6-light fixed window, probably C19. 1 first floor window above the porch is a 3-light casement, 6 panes per light, probably C19. Interior The ground floor has large rough cross beams and an open fireplace with stone rubble jambs, an unmoulded lintel and a cloam oven with a clay lid. The stairs were formerly in a rear outshut which no longer exists and C20 stairs have been inserted in the main range. A blocked doorway on the right-hand wall formerly led into the adjacent property. The cottage is on a prominent corner site in the village and has group value with the adjacent cottage and Nos 1 and 2 Gridley Corner (qv).
