House, formerly farmhouse. There are no dateable features in evidence earlier than
early C17 but the house is almost certainly of late medieval origin with late C18 or
early C19 additions. Plastered cob and rubble walls. Gable ended slate roof.
Small brick shaft at left gable end and tall projecting rubble lateral stack at
front.
Plan: originally 2-room and through passage plan, hall to right is heated by front
lateral stack with unheated lower room to left. It is possible that the hall stack
is part of a C17 remodelling of a medieval house but there is no direct evidence of
this. Adjoining the hall stack is a projecting window-bay. At the right hand end
of the hall is an C18 or early C19 addition which was originally a granary with a
former malthouse beyond it which retains its thick malting floor upstairs. The
granary has been converted to domestic use. At the rear of the passage and lower
end is an outshut likely to have been added in the early C19. Possibly at this time
a stack was inserted at the gable end of the lower room.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front to original house part to left.
C19 3-light casements to left and centre on first floor, similar C20 casement to
their right. On ground floor to left is late C20 3-light ovolo-moulded wooden
mullion window. To right of centre is single storey projecting hall window with 2-
light small-paned early C20 casement and single light squint window in its left-hand
side. Immediately to the right is the projecting lateral stack with large semi-
circular oven projection to its right. Late C19 gabled porch to left of centre with
decorative barge-board and C19 plank door behind. Former outbuilding at right-hand
end of house has late C20 2-light square section mullion windows with stone steps
leading to a first floor doorway to former granary. A flat roof extends from the
right of the steps to an outshut projecting from the front of the malthouse at the
right-hand end and underneath it are 2 doors.
Interior: hall has 2 chamfered axial beams with hollow step stops. The fireplace
has a plain wooden lintel which may not be original. Small C17 wall cupboard beside
fireplace with H-hinges.
Roof: 4 C17 trusses survive with trenched purlins and collars halved on with curved
notch joints.
Goodcott is mentioned as a Domesday Manor and must have been a house of some
importance; although relatively few early features survive it still preserves a very
traditional and attractive exterior and a fairly unaltered plan form.
