Details
WINKLEIGH FORE STREET (north side), SS 6308 Winkleigh 11/170 Hillmans 21.2.77 GV II House. Early to mid C17 possibly with earlier origins and C18 extensions. Rendered cob and rubble walls. Gable-ended thatch roof. 2 rubble stacks with dripcourses, 1 at gable-end and one axial. Plan: 2-room-and-through-passage front range - left-hand room heated by fireplace in its end wall, right-hand room by axial stack backing onto passage. 2 long rear wings extend behind either end - the left-hand one is at least partly C17 as doorways of this date lead into it from the house on the 1st floor so presumably at least part of it had a domestic purpose; the other wing was probably wholly for use as outbuildings and is more likely to be C18. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front of C20 3-light casements without glazing bars on the 1st floor. Below and to the right is a C19 16-pane bay window with modillion cornice. Tudor type door at centre. To left is C19 double shop front with projecting cornice supported on brackets. Interior: the ground floor exhibits few original features but the original fireplaces are likely to survive behind C20 blocking. On the 1st floor 3 C17 chamfered doorframes survive, 2 into the left-hand rear wing. The roof timbers are insubstantial straight principals and probably date from the C18 or C19.
