Details

SHEBBEAR SS 40 NW 6/77 Warden Farmhouse - - II Farmhouse. First half of C17, possibly with C16 origins, extended in late C17, remodelled in early C19. Partly rendered rubble walls incorporating some cob with some rebuilding in brick. Gable ended slate roofs. 3 brick gable end stack and large rubble stack at gable end of rear right-hand wing. Plan: U-shaped plan with complex pattern of development. 2 ranges run east-west, connected by a wing at the east end running north to south. This and the range to its rear appear to be the earlier - the north-south range consisting of one large room heated by a gable end fireplace and the adjoining rear range has one principal heated room at the end with a staircase next to it which connects with the wing. The division between these 2 ranges does not extend into the roof space and they may be contemporary. In the time of the present occupant's father the rear range was completely re-roofed and it is said that carved timbers were removed suggesting that it may in fact be late medieval, but the evidence has now gone. In the late C17 a front range was added running east-west, parallel with the other. Evidence in the roof suggests that it may be a rebuilding of earlier fabric. It consists of 2 sizeable rooms with a central stairhall but this arrangement may be the result of a remodelling in the early-mid C19. In the mid C20 the front wall of this range was partly rebuilt. Exterior: 2 storeys with cellar under left end of front range. Regular 5-window front with gabled dormer windows to first floor of which the right-hand one is mid C20 2-light casement, the other later C19. Large canted bay window on ground floor to left and right with 10:25:10 pane sashes - the right-hand one is early C19, the left-hand one a mid C20 facsimile. Central large mid C20 glazed porch which has C19 6-panelled door behind. The wing behind the right end of the front range is set back slightly with a C19 outshut in the angle. At right angles to the wing is rear range parallel to the front range but longer and forming a very narrow courtyard. This has a tall slate-roofed wall across its end with the doorway formed by a re- used 2-light granite mullion window head. Interior: early C17 wing has 3 chamfered and ogee stopped cross beams. Very large open fireplace has chamfered and bar-stopped wooden lintel. Brick oven to right and cloam oven in back. Room in rear range has roughly chamfered cross beam. At the head of the stairs - leading into the early C17 wing, is a very good C17 ovolo- moulded double doorframe complete with original studded plank doors. The front range has numerous early C18 fielded 2-panel doors. In the ground floor right-hand room is a simple early C19 ceiling band and 6-panel door. Roof: the central wing retains its early C17 roof structure consisting of 3 substantial straight principals with threaded purlins and cranked collars halved on wth double curved notch joint. The southern end truss has had a cob wall apparently built up around it. The roof to the front range is late C17 with straight principals which have trenched purlins and curved chamfered collars slightly set into the trusses. Roof over rear range entirely C20. The plain exterior of this house disguises a building with an interesting pattern of development and some good internal features.
