11/21 No. 9 (Kingsley Cottage), 20.2.58 with forecourt, retaining walls and railings
GV II
House. Probably early C19. Rendered and whitewashed, slate roof with gabled ends and wide eaves, 2 brick stacks, one on ridge to left, and one rising from eaves to the right. Lean-to at rear, slate roof. Plan : central hall, 2 flanking rooms to left a kitchen, to right a parlour with staircase at rear. Scullery wing at right angles at rear of left. Exterior: 2 storeys, symmetrical 3-window front. Flush-mounted 16-pane sash windows which are coeval with exposed sash boxes and moulded surrounds. Central door opening, 6-panelled door with the top 2 panels glazed. Gabled hood on wooden brackets. Elevated cobble forecourt with a colourwashed rubble retaining wall, iron railings and gate. Interior: parlour to left of ground floor with a front corner fireplace backing onto the entrance hall, now blocked. Kitchen with a large gable end fireplace in a wood surround with a mantle, both original. Wing at rear is featureless. The staircase appears to be in its original position. On the first floor the room over the kitchen with a chimneypiece in a moulded original stone surround, later C19 grate. The cottage is named after the author Charles Kingsley (1819 - 75) whose father was rector at Clovelly from 1831 until 1836 when he went to become rector of Chelsea. Charles Kingsley published "Westward Ho!" in 1855 in which Clovelly figured.
