7/232 Outbuilding (Bakehouse and Pigsty) immediately south east and south of Welcombe Barton
GV II
Bakehouse and adjoining pigstys. C17 bakehouse and circa early C19 pigstys. Bakehouse: Stone rubble. The roof reduced in height to a monopit clad in corrugated asbestos. Massive integral stack at the right hand west end with a truncated shaft. Plan: Rectangular single-cell plan with a large fireplace and oven at the right hand (west) end and a doorway at the centre of the north front. Probably originally one storey. There is now another doorway in the rear south wall and the left hand east end is open. Exterior: 1 storey. The north front has a central doorway with a rough timber lintel and relieving arch, the door is missing. Below the eaves, above the doorway, a row of 14 pigeon holes, some with slate ledges. On the left hand (north east) corner where the bakehouse adjoins the barn q.v. there is some projecting masonry, rather like a diagonal buttress. Interior: The large open fireplace at the right hand west end has dressed stone jambs and a chamfered timber lintel with straight cut stops. The large oven in the right hand side of the fireplace has an arched opening and is clay lined. The oven projects on the side of the stack inside the building. The Pigstys are in a long narrow rectangular range to the right (west) of the bakehouse; stone rubble, with a slate gable-ended roof with ridge tiles, one of the tiles is an early crested ridge-tile. There are feeding hatches on the north side facing the south end of the house. Interiors of the pigstys were not inspected. Said to be used as an office.
