SU60NE HAVANT ROAD, Farlington 774-1/2/171 (North side) Grigg & Swale Monument, approx 26m W of NW corner of St Andrew's Church
GV II
Chest tomb. c1793. Ashlar. Podium with splayed sides, moulded cap and base set on stone balls off plinth, weathered top slab set behind lid. Each side of die has a panel with shell motif at each corner. Long east facing side has inscription "Sacred to memory of Mrs Elizabeth Ann Griff, the wife of James Grigg Esq of Purbrook who departed this life on the 17th day of July 1793 aged 36 years. Also to the memory of the above named James Grigg who departed this life on the 16th day of June 1821 aged 70 years". Long west facing side has inscription "Sacred to the memory of Louisa Swale, widow of Colin Richard Swale RM and daughter of the late James Grigg Esq of Purbrook Hants. Born May 1799, Died February 6th 1885." End of tomb facing south has inscription "In memory of Anne Swale, second daughter of the late ---- Richard Swale and granddaughter of the late James Grigg esq. Born the 6th May 1827, and died 25th January 1881. End of tomb facing north has inscription "Sacred to the memory of Major Henry Swale R.M. son of the late Colin Richard Swale and grandson of the late James Grigg Esq, who died December 20th 18-- aged 42 years."
