SZ6399 GOVERNOR'S GREEN 774-1/12/12 Iron railings and gates surrounding the Green

GV II

Iron railings. Early to mid C19. Wrought-iron. Railings facing north-east. Pembroke Road: posts are ribbed, each with moulded top and set in stone plinth. Upper horizontal flat rail and curved stay. Intermediate balusters similar but shorter. The far right section has pointed posts each with `crook' at top and set in stone base. Upper and lower flat rails and stay. Interim shorter balusters with pointed tops set in base. Railings facing north-west (Penny Street) running to church are the same pattern as south sections at north-east face. From Penny Street railings running across Governor's Green in south-east direction on a line with chancel and then eastwards to south-east side and Pembroke Road have posts each with 4 sided spike set on a rectangular box top and curved stays set into ground. Upper horizontal flat rail. Smaller intermediate interim balusters set in ground. Posts on south-east side has star motif on rectangular box top and City of Portsmouth Crest to posts abutting Pembroke Road. 2-leaf iron gates on south-east side and single iron gate and 2-leaf iron gate at far left of north-east (Pembroke Road).
