Details
SY 18 NE BRANSCOMBE STREET (south side) 7/47 Clematis Cottage and Gill Cottage - Cottage (formerly listed as part 22.2.55 of Nos.1-5 Street Cottages) GV II 2 cottages. Probably late C18-early C19. Plastered cob and stone rubble, parts are exposed stone rubble; stone rubble stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof. Plan: 2 adjoining cottages at the end of a row of cottages. They are built along the lane and face onto it to the north-east. Clematis Cottage is at the left (south-east) end. It has a 2-room plan main block, an unheated left room and right room heated by an axial stack in the party wall which is shared by Gill Cottages. Clematis also has a probably secondary 2-room plan block projecting at right angles to rear of the right room. This rear block has a projecting gable-end stack. Gill Cottage to right (north-west) is the end cottage of the row. It has a 2-room plan. The left room is heated by an axial stack in the party wall and shared with Clematis Cottage. The right room has a gable-end stack. Both cottages are 2 storeys. Exterior: overall irregular 4-window front of C20 casements with glazing bars; there are 2 to each cottage. Both front doorways contain C20 part-glazed doors. Gill Cottage has a third ground floor window which appears to be blocking a former doorway. Maybe Gill Cottage was formerly two 1-room plan cottages. To left the roof continues over adjoining Jasmine Cottage (q.v.) and to right it is gable-ended. Interiors were not available for inspection at the time of this survey. Clematis Cottage and Gill Cottage form part of an exceptionally good group of thatch-roofed buildings which make up the hamlet of Street.
