4/154 The Old Forge - 16.7.87 II - House, formerly 2 cottages. C17 and C18, modernised circa 1970. Plastered local stone and flint rubble, maybe with some cob; the plaster is lightly incised as ashlar; stone rubble stacks with plastered brick chimneyshafts; thatch roof. Plan: L-plan building. The main block faces north. It has a 2-room plan with central through-passage and gable-end stacks. A secondary, probably early C18, 1- room plan extension projects forward at right angles in front of the left (east) room and overlaps the end a little; it is unheated. It seems that sometime, probably in the C19, it was divided into 2 cottages with a partition dividing the original partition into 2 narrow passages. In the C20 the left (east) room was enlarged by knocking out the original passage partition that side. At the same time the cottages were reunited. 2 storeys. Exterior: the main front has a not quite symmetrical 2-window front of C20 casements without glazing bars, some of them aluminium framed. The roughly central front doorway is a circa 1960 brick 2-centred arch containing a contemporary plank door. The roof is gable-ended and the front block roof is hipped. At the back there are a couple of C19 casements with round-headed lights and glazing bars. Interior: is mostly the result of C20 modernisations and little early carpentry detail is exposed. The left room of the main block has a chamfered and scroll- stopped crossbeam and the front block has a chamfered axial beam with runout stops. The fireplaces are blocked with C20 grates. The roof was not inspected and there is no sign of trusses on the first floor.
