Axe Farmhouse

II

House. Early C16 with inserted floor to former open hall. Plastered stone rubble. Thatched roof with half hipped and gabled ends, and eyebrow eaves. Two storeys. Long four/five window range. Three ovolo moulded wood mullion four-light windows and later casements. Doorway to cross passage off centre with heavy moulded wood frame with Tudor arch. Rendered brick ridge stack off centre. Four light chamfered wooden window in north end. External stack and projection stair bay at rear. Interior: Jointed cruck trusses. Cross passage with plank and muntin screen and section of similar screen with Tudor arch doorway to side of chimney stack which backs onto cross passage. Plank and muntin screen at higher level with Tudor arch doorway. Two solid wood newel stairs at rear. Partition on first floor with round arch doorway and another Tudor arch doorway at the top of stairs at the lower end. Stopped chamfer ceiling beams.
