GREAT DUNMOW
Tooleys Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse. Late C16 and C20, timber framed and plastered and part brickwork.
Of complex plan form with the original long block orientated N-S with 2 storey
C20 wings at the S and N ends, a continuous C20 rear lean-to. 2 storey porch
of the same period and one storey and attics extension leading out to the N
from the northern extension wing. Substantially of 2 storeys, the timber frame
is exposed generally, but the extensions are partly brick and exposed reused
members. The original block has a gabled peg tile roof and ridgeline stack
and large lean-to dormer on the W elevation. This elevation also has an
original exposed, arched, doorhead. All windows are C20 oak with leaded lights.
The interior reveals the extensive remains of a massively framed late C16/early
C17, 2 storey house with double sided inglenook fireplace, stop chamfered
bridging joists, long elegant jowls and a raised collar, tie beam less roof,
formerly with unusual 'V' struts. Moated ancient manor site. RCHM 40.
