5/108 Drake's Cottage - 22.7.80 - II

Cottage. Circa 1500 or earlier with extensive alterations and a large C20 extension. Cob, stone plinth, under thatched roof, half-hipped to right-hand end. The old range (the higher end of a former 3-room cross passage plan) now abuts on to a 1980s extension set at right-angles to the old range forming an L-shaped plan overall. The lower end has been destroyed. 2 storeys throughout. Front: Doorway (close to internal angle of L-plan) with C20 thatched porch; two 2- light windows of unequal size to right at ground floor, one upper window under eyebrow eaves. Much buttressing. Rear: elevation above road; lateral stack with bake-oven bulge; three 2 and 3-light windows to ground floor, one 2-light window above under eyebrow eaves. Timber casements throughout, C20. Interior: Hall fireplace with large timber lintel and one original jamb; brick and stone lined with side oven; one rendered post and wattle screen with shouldered door arch; chamfered beam with step hollow stops. Roof: 2 principal trusses (possibly jointed crucks), one closed, each with collar, yoke side pegged and morticed and diagonal ridge piece; trenched purlins; hip cruck to right-hand end. Smoke-blackened throughout.
