Details

DUNKESWELL DUNKESWELL ST 10 NW 5/33 The Forge - GV II House incorporating former forge. Late C17 - early C18, the forge is late C19, the house was thoroughly refurbished circa 1970 and circa 1980 rear extension. Plastered local stone rubble, maybe with some cob, the north end wall is clad with corrugated iron; stone rubble stacks topped with C20 brick; thatch roof to the house, slate to former forge and extension. Plan: 2-room plan house facing west. The right (north) room has a gable-end stack but this is a C20 insertion. The larger left room has an axial stack backing onto the right room. The forge is a single storey extension to the left (south) end which has now been converted to domestic use, and there is a single storey kitchen extension to rear of the former forge. The house is 2 storeys. Exterior: the house has a regular but not symmetrical 3-window front of C20 casements with glazing bars. There are low thatch eyebrows over the first floor windows. The front doorway is at the left end of the house and it contains a C20 2- flap door under a contemporary thatched hood. There are 3 C20 casements with glazing bars to the former forge. The main roof and former forge roof are gable- ended. Interior: is largely the result of C20 modernisations and much of the original carpentry detail has been replaced. The original fireplace however survives; it is stone rubble with an oak-framed front.
