Details
WHIMPLE THE SQUARE, SY 0497-0597 10/231 Nos 1 and 2 Brook Cottages 7.7.80 GV II
2 cottages. Late C17 or C18. Plastered cob on stone rubble footings; stone rubble stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof. Plan: pair of cottages facing west onto The Square. The left (northern) cottage has a 1-room plan and a rear lateral stack. The right cottage has a 2-room plan with an axial stack between the rooms. 2 storeys with C20 service extensions to rear. Exterior: overall irregular 5-window front of C18, C19 and C20 casements with glazing bars, the first floor ones with thatch eyebrows over. The 2 front doors contain C20 plank doors. Roof is half-hipped both ends. Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of this survey although original carpentry detail is said to survive. Brook Cottages form part of a group of listed buildings in the vicinity of the Church of St Mary.
