ASHTON LOWER ASHTON SX 88 SW 5/30 4 ranges of farmbuilding forming farmyard north west of Blatchford Farmhouse GV II 4 ranges of farmbuildings. Probably early C19. Granite and freestone rubble; corrugated iron roofs (formerly thatched). Plan: the farmbuildings are grouped round the farmyard to the north west of Blatchford Farmhouse which forms part of the south east range with an adjacent linhay with a hipped roof. The south west range consists of pigsties with a monopitch roof, gabled at ends; the north west range is a threshing barn with rear horse engine house and linhay to the left, roof gabled at right end, hipped at left end; the north east range is a shippon or stable with loft over, roof hipped at right end, gabled at left end. Exterior: single-storey pigsties, other ranges 2 storeys. The south east range has 2 open-fronted bays at the left end with a stone front wall to right of centre. Timber doors ground floor left, 1 stone doorway with a segmental arch to right of centre, 1 loft opening. The south west range has 5 pigsty doorways on the front. The north west range has 3 doorways to the left and is clad with corrugated iron above; the threshing barn has 1 large doorway with a segmental arch, 2 windows to the right and a loft opening above. The north-east range has 4 doorways to the ground floor with segmental arches, a loft door in the first bay from the left protected by a canopy and a 2-light loft opening to the right. Stone steps at the right end give access to a loft doorway. An attractive group, visible from the opposite bank of the River Teign and important to the setting of Blatchford Farmhouse. Group value with buildings at Ashton Mill.
