BISHOPSTEIGNTON LUTON SX 97 NW

8/63 Ivy Cottage

23.8.55 II

Small cottage. C17 or C18. Whitewashed and rendered, probably cob and stone ; thatched roof, gabled at ends ; end stacks with brick shafts. Plan: Single depth 2 room plan cottage with an entrance on the left gable end and a small rear left lean-to, probably of a later date. Exterior: 2 storeys. 2 first floor and 2 ground floor timber casements on the front, facing the road. Very small stair window on left end wall, presumably lighting a winder or newel stair ; C19 front door on left return. Interior: No access at time of survey (1987). The old list description includes a verbatim report of the interior "once two staircases opening from the downstairs rooms, one of which is now blocked. The other is spiral. Between the rooms is said to be an oak screen with frame papered over but easily restored. Old beam papered over". The cottage is very unspoiled externally and these interior features are likely to survive.
