GV II
2 adjoining houses, Spring Cottage to the north-east, the Chantry, said to be a converted farmbuilding, adjoining at the south-west. Spring Cottage mid C17, the Chantry C18 or C19 with C20 alterations. Whitewashed and rendered, probably cob on stone rubble footings ; thatched roof, gabled to right end of Spring Cottage, half- hipped at left end of Chantry. End stacks to Spring Cottage. Plan: Spring Cottage is a single depth range with 2 principal heated rooms, one on either side of the entrance. It is not clear how the centre of the house was originally used ; at present it has modern partitions and a C20 stair, it may originally have been a lobby with a rear service room. The Chantry, converted from an agricultural building (information from owner), has a single storey principal room and rear lean-to addition. Exterior: The Chantry partly single-storey, Spring Cottage 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front to Spring Cottage, the eaves thatch eyebrowed over the first floor windows, front door to right of centre with a slated porch hood. 2-light C19 or C20 casements with glazing bars. The Chantry has one large transomed casement window with shutters and is entered through a glazed lean-to on the left return wall, 4-pane first floor casement above. Interior: Spring Cottage has a chamfered step-nick stopped crossbeam in the right hand room and an open fireplace with an ovolo-moulded lintel with similar stops. Evidence of a former plank and muntin screen to the left of the entrance. The left hand room has an ovolo-moulded stopped crossbeam, the open fireplace is rebuilt. Roof: Apex not inspected, straight principal rafters visible upstairs, some fixed to wall posts with nails. Part of a corner group in the village. A postcard of circa 1900 shows the Chantry before the glazed lean-to was added and describes it as the 'Reading Room'. Currie and Currie, Teignmouth, Devon ; Real Photo Series.
