Duck's Pool Cottage
GV
II
Small house. Mid/late C17. Colourwashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings ;
thatched roof, gabled at left end, hipped at right end ; left end stack, rear right
projecting stack.
Plan: Single depth 2 room plan, formerly with a cross passage, C20 stair introduced
into passage, newel stair adjacent to left end stack. A thick crosswall between the
former passage and right end room suggests the possibility that this may have been a
single cell cottage, extended at the right end, or a larger building rebuilt at the
right end. Former outbuilding at right end converted to domestic use this century.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front, the eaves thatch eyebrowed over
the first floor windows. Approximately central front door with thatched porch canopy
carried on moulded brackets ; fenestration of C20 2-light timber casements with
glazing bars in enlarged embrasures except ground floor right which is a larger 4-
light similar window. The rear elevation has one 2-light first floor C19 timber
casement with glazing bars lighting the stair.
Interior: Unmodernized. The left hand room has a chamfered crossbeam with step
scroll stops and an open fireplace with a chamfered step-stopped lintel ; stone newel
stair adjacent to stack. C17 chamfered stopped lintel to doorway to right hand room
which has an open fireplace with a timber lintel and no exposed ceiling beams.
Roof: Apex not inspected at time of survey (1987) but principal rafters visible
upstairs are straight.
Ducks' Pool Cottage stands at the entrance to the farm lane leading to Perry Farm
(q.v.) and is in a prominent position on the roadside. It was formerly called Perry
Cottage and was presumably a labourer's house at one time.
