14/275 Regent House including gate piers
GV II
House. Early C19. Stuccoed with a slate roofs gabled at the right end, hipped at the left end, hipped at the end of the rear wing; 2 right end stacks. Plan: Approximately rectangular on plan, double depth with an entrance on the west side, the former garden elevation, at the left end. Details of plan unclear at time of survey as interior not inspected. Exterior: 2 and 3 storeys. Asymmetrical 2:3 bay front, the 2 bays in a lower-roofed block at the left end. The taller block has deep eaves with eaves brackets, platbands and steps with iron railings up to a wide front door at the left; good doorcase with brackets and a dentil frieze below the cornice. The taller block has 3 ground floor C19 2 pane sashes; 3 first floor C19 12-pane sashes and 3 second floor C19 6-pane sashes. The 2 storey block at the left has 2 first floor C19 2-pane sashes. The right return, facing the Strand, is 3 bays with 2 ground floor mid/late C19 canted bays with iron cresting and 4 pane sashes; 3 first floor C19 12-pane sashes 3 second floor C19 6-pane sashes. A pair of gate piers adjoining this elevation at the left is crowned with pineapple finials. Interior: not inspected but may retain features of interest. The old list description refers to a castellated red brick garden wall with 3 square corner towers, a gardener's cottage and a gazebo, dated 1837. Formerly the home of a local celebrity, Captain Peacock, who was a collector of curios and keeper of pleasure boats.
