GV II
Cottage. Probably early C18. Cob on stone rubble footings ; whitewashed and rendered ; thatched roof, gabled at ends ; left end stack with brick shaft. Plan: 1 room plan cottage, one of a row of cottages, with a winder stair adjacent to the stack. The ground floor has been divided, probably in the C20, into a large heated room at the front with a narrow rear service room and the first floor has also been divided. There is no obvious evidence that the cottage was connected to the building adjoining at the right (north-west), but a blocked first floor doorway shows that it was linked to the building adjoining at the south-east. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2 window front, the front door at the extreme right. 6-pane 1970s fixed window to left of door. The first floor has a tiny 2- light stair window to the left and a C20 2-light timber casement with glazing bars to the right. The rear elevation has a late C18 or C19 2-light small pane timber casement. Interior: The ground floor has a chamfered axial beam and an open fireplace with sandstone jambs, a timber lintel and the remains of a bread oven. Roof: Apex not inspected, straight principal rafters and purlins visible on the first floor suggest an C18 or early C19 roof structure. An unspoiled 1 room plan cottage, a rarity in the Country.
