6/231 House in west corner of the churchyard

GV II

Small house, possibly 2 dwellings. Mid late C19. Red sandstone ashlar with stone dressings; slate roof with crested ridge tiles, gabled at ends with curly barge boards; front lateral stack with tall stone shafts, rear lateral stack, left end stack with stone shaft. Gothic. Plan: Sited in the west corner of the churchyard. An L plan block facing High Street with a porch in the angle with front doors into each block. A single storey rear wing faces the churchyard and is sited within it. Exterior: 2 storey main block, single-storey rear wing. Asymmetrical 1 window front to High Street, gabled to the front at the left, set back to the right. Pretty open timber Gothic porch in angle between the blocks with C19 plank front doors. I ground floor 3-light transomed casement to the left with a cranked head, similar 2-light first floor casement above. The block to the right is blind except for the front door with a projecting lateral stack with set-offs. The right return (facing into the church yard) is gabled to the left with transomed windows similar to those on the High Street elevation, similar windows to rear elevation. The rear wing has one doorway and 3 1-light windows. Interior: Not inspected. A well-preserved building in a crucial position in the village.
