10/415 Little Harvey and Little Harvey Cottage 23.8.55 (formerly listed as Teignharvey Farmhouse with thatched barns)
GV II
Farmhouse divided into 2. Probably early C16, remodelled early/mid C17 when the rear wing may have been added. C20 renovations. Colourwashed rendered stone; thatched roof with plain ridge hipped at left end, gabled at right end, hipped at end of rear wing; front left protecting lateral stacks axial stack with rendered shaft, right end stack. Plan: Likely to be a late medieval open hall house in origin but with no access to the roofspace this remains unproven. The main range is single depth, Little Harvey probably the hall and inner room of a 3 room plan range (passage no longer exists) axial hall stack backing on to the passage. Little Harvey Cottage, to the left, the lower end, heated from a lateral stack at the front. A rear wing at right angles to the hall is probably secondary to the main range, a rounded recess on the rear wall of the hall may be the site of the C17 stair. Exterior: 2 storeys. Assymetrical 4 window front, the front door to Little Harvey probably Cl7, 2 planks with a massive timber lock box; C20 gabled porch hood. Front door to Little Harvey at extreme left. 2 - 3 and 4-light late C20 plastic windows with glazing bars. Interior: Little Harvey only inspected. The hall has a C20 fireplace, probably concealing earlier features; a higher end plank and muntin screen (painted white) with roll-moulded muntins and chamfered, plastered-over crossbeams at either end which may be jetties. Plastered-over chamfered crossbeams in right hand room with additional support at the front end. Roof: No access to apex at time of survey (1987) but there is a jointed cruck truss over the right end of the house (cruck feet plastered over), collar above ceiling height. The next truss to the left, which is partly buried in a first floor partition appears to have a lower collar and has been altered to make room for an axial passage leading into the left hand first floor room; this has involved cutting off some of the rafters. Either or both of these trusses could be medieval. Little Harvey not inspected, but may retain features of interest including the possibility of medieval roof timbers.
