UPTON PYNE SX 99 NW 3/46 Great Ley - - II Farmhouse. C17. Cob on stone plinth, with concrete tiles replacing thatch. L- shaped in plan, the longer element representing a traditional 3-room through passage plan with a lateral back stack, to which has been added a parlour wing with an end stack, now partially obscured by a cob outskirt which connects with the adjoining barn. 2 storeys. 3-window range, plus a gabled parlour wing to the left. All C20 casements, and C20 glazed porch to left of centre. To either side of the passage is evidence of former screens, a screen groove to a chamfered beam to the left-hand side dressed only towards the passage, and doorway notches to right-hand side. To the left end of the left-hand chamber by the stairs there survives a stud and panel screen supporting a 1st floor post and wattle partition. The right-hand chamber retains its stone firesurround with ovolo mouldings. Ground floor beams, single-chamfer with step-hollow stops. Roof construction of this part of the house is of jointed arch, side pegged, with collars with Z-tenons. The parlour wing fireplace has jambs of Thorverton stone with a wooden lintel, single chamfered with step-hollow stops. Above this at 1st floor level and served by the same end stack is another fireplace with a wooden lintel, chamfered and stone jambs with wave moulding.
