COLATON RALEIGH
CHURCH ROAD, Colaton Raleigh
Boundary wall and gates to north and east of Churchyard of St John

GV
II

Churchyard walls including north and east gates. Probably 1875. Wall made of large
local river cobbles with brick plinth and coping with crested ridge tiles, brick
gate piers with sandstone ashlar caps; wrought iron gates. The walls are low and
step down a little regularly as the ground level drops. The coping projects and is
supported on a series of close set brick corbels with rounded soffit. The gate
piers are square in section with narrow chamfered and stopped edges. The caps
project on brick corbels similar to the wall corbels and the caps are low octagonal
pyramids with scrolled corners. The wrought iron gates are similar in style but
different. The narrower eastern gate has rails only to the lockbar and the upper
panel contains a cusped arch enriched with scrolls. The northern double gates are
simpler with alternate full height rails with clover leaf ends.
