Details
SX 86 NW BROADHEMPSTON BROADHEMPSTON 2/65 Hunter's Lodge - II Small house. C17 or possibly earlier, probably C18 addition. Rendered rubble and cob walls, 3 rendered rubble stacks, 1 projects from left gable end, 1 is lateral at the rear of left-hand wing and 1 is lateral and projects the rear of right-hand block. Thatched roof gable to left, hipped to right. Original plan somewhat obscured by later internal alterations. Right-hand section is possibly the original, of 2 room plan initially with 1 room to the right heated by lateral stack at rear. Wing at front of left-hand end, also likely to have had 2 rooms, both heated, left hand one by gable stack probably with staircase beside stack, right hand one by rear lateral stack. 2 storeys. Left-hand block forms main front facing road and has symmetrical 2 window facade of circa early C19 12-pane hornless sashes. Central probably C19 wide door, now part glazed. Right-hand block has identical first floor window at centre, C20 glazed door to left with small octagonal window to its right. Attached at right-hand end is C20 single storey extension. Interior: Inaccessible at time of survey but right-hand block seen to contain roughly chamfered cross beams. Small open fireplaces with rough wooden lintels. This is one of the few thatched houses in the area and this, with its relatively complete set of C19 sashes, contributes to its traditional external appearance.
