3/252 Vinnicombes and Lower - Vinnicombes
GV II
Farmhouse, now 2 houses. Late C15-early C16. Rendered and painted cob walls, diagonally set asbestos slate roof on 2 levels, originally thatched. Brick stack over left gable end, axial stack to right of this, rear lateral stack and stone stack with brick shaft over right gable end. Originally 3-room, through-passage plan, now with further lower room C17/C18 and rear outshuts. 2 storeys. Irregular 5-window front. Lower Vinnicombes left has C19, 2-light casements with small panes. Ground floor has 2 windows to left of present doorway with small gabled porch and 2 windows to right. Far right window is in original doorway position leading to through passage. This part is under same roof as Vinnicombes which has C20 windows and single storey flat roofed extension to ground floor. Interior of higher roofed part contains all the earlier features including smoke blackened 4-bay jointed cruck roof structure with cambered collars and wide threaded purlins. 2 frames are altered probably C17 and have tie beams replacing cruck posts. Round arched oak, chamfered doorframe, survives to rear of through passage with upper parts of jambs forming lower part of arch. Only top rail, beam survives of screen to left of passage with chamfer and cavetto moulding to lower room side and original joists but right screen is intact with chamfered muntins and original shouldered doorframe. Floor over passage is jettied to right, hall side. Main hall ceiling later, probably late C16 and at higher level with one original cross beam with chamfers and stepped stops surviving and some moulded joists. Lateral rear hearth of same date with oak lintel. Tudor arched oak doorframe to left of fireplace and flat headed door frame on first floor to right of chimney, probably for access to newel stair, not surviving.
