BOVEY TRACEY Former Railway Station 0/D II

Disused railway station. 1865-6 for the Moretonhampstead and South Devon Railway. Snecked granite and local metamorphic stone with rock faced rusticated granite dressings including quoins, plinth arches and jambs to doorway and windows eaves cornice and chimney stacks. Slate roof with gabled ends, zinc roll to ridge and deep caves and verges. Eaves cornice of two courses of rusticated granite. Two rusticated granite chimney stacks with short octagonal shafts, single shiftover left (south) gable end and axial stack towards right (north) and with two shafts. Rusticated granite plinth.

Simple Victorian Tudor - gothic style. Rectangular two-room main block comprising larger entrance hall at centre and left heated by fireplace at either end and doorways to front and to platform; and a smaller heated room to right (north). at either end there are small single storey blocks, each with a pair of end doorways.

Single storey. Entrance front to east: 1:1:3:1 bays. The three bay centre slightly advanced with drain roof carried forward on four large wooden brackets, on corbels, to form canopy. Central panelled door, top panels now glazed, flanked by narrow single bent casements with six panes and Y-bars to top. recessed bay flanking centre each with 2-light casement with glazing bars and central Y-mullion. Flat roof end blocks set back at each end with granite cornice and coping low parquets and narrow single light casement with glazing bars and Y-bars to top panes. All openings have depressed 2-centred arches and original casements complete with glazing bars.

Platform elevation to west; 1:1:3:1 bays in similarly arched openings but some blocked as blind. There was originally a canopy over the platform but this has been removed. It was probably cast iron.

The south end has 2 arched doorways, one half blocked to form window. The north end has two doorways with straight granite lintels.

Interior: moulded plaster cornices. Simple slate or black marble chimney piece in hall. The other fireplaces are blocked and there is a recent partition dividing the main hall and another partition in the north room to form a rear passage. O

Bovey Tracey Station is on the Moretonhampstead and South Devon Railway. This line was opened in 1866 and closed in 1971.
