Details
SX 76 NE BROADHEMPSTON FORDER GREEN 1/84 Forder Green Farmhouse - 23.8.55 - II Farmhouse. Early C19. Stucco walls, slate roof, hipped at end. 2 rendered brick stacks, one at left end and one at rear of front block, axial to wing. L-shaped plan, apparently integral. Front block is double depth with large room at front to left side, asymmetrical entrance hall and smaller room to the right. The entrance hall leads to a large stairwell at the rear to the left hand side and on its right is a further large principal room. The service rooms are contained in a rear wing. 2 storeys. Almost regular front of 3 windows with central door, all disposed towards the right side. Probably original tripartite 20-pane hornless sashes. First floor centre is single light 16-pane sash. Contemporary 6-fielded panel door has rectangular fanlight above with radial glazing bars, doorcase with panelled reveals. Door canopy supported on slender reeded columns at front. To right hand side of front block are 2 original French windows with marginal glazing bars. At rear is round-headed stair window. Irregular rear wing obviously intended for inferior purpose. Interior is relatively intact apart from fireplaces. Principal left hand room has cornice with ceiling band of rosette pattern. Recess at rear of room was formerly arched and has flat pilaster either side. Entrance hall has flagstone floor. Right hand front room has simple flat ceiling band. The larger room behind it has a moulded cornice and simple flat ceiling band. Original open well staircase has column newels and stick balusters with curved and ramped handrail. Original panelled shutters to the 3 principal rooms. This house is an interesting example of a provincial adaptation of the classical house on a modest level.
