IDEFORD FORE STREET, Ideford SX 87 NE 4/94 Cherrytrees and Wayland Cottage
GV II
2 adjoining cottages, possibly originally 1 house. Circa early C17 with thorough late C20 renovations. Colourwashed rendered cob; wooden shingle roof to Wayland cottage (left hand), C20 tile roof to Cherrytrees (right hand); end stacks, axial stack. The present plan is single depth, 3 rooms wide with a rear right wing to Wayland Cottage, forming a T plan. The original plan is not entirely clear but may have been a 3 room and passage arrangement, the original entrance possibly to the right of the front door of Wayland Cottage with the hall stack (left end of Cherrytrees) backing on to the passage. At one time the range was divided into 3 cottages. The internal partitions of the present cottages have been altered in the late C20. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2 + 3 window front. The left hand cottage (Wayland Cottage) is almost symmetrical with a central front door with a lean-to porch and three 2- and one 3-light casement, 2 panes per light. 'Cherrytrees' has a projecting stack at the right end and an approximately central gabled porch. 2 and 3 light casement, 2 panes per light, ground floor window right C20. Interior 'Wayland Cottage,' possibly the lower end of the original range, has chamfered cross beams with step stops and a replaced lintel to the fireplace. Roofspace not inspected, 'Cherrytrees' has 2 large fireplaces, the right hand fireplace with rebuilt jambs and a chamfered stopped lintel. 1 cross beam is chamfered with a scroll stop. 2 jointed cruck trusses survive, the right hand truss (over the putative inner room) is more finely finished than the left hand truss. The purlins are either butt or threaded and the collar is mortised into the principals. The old list description refers to "deeds said to date from 1625". An interesting vernacular range in the centre of Ideford village.
