CHUDLEIGH FORE STREET (west side), Chudleigh SX 8679 6/55 Tireh - II
House, formerly schoolmaster's house. Circa 1860. Local grey limestone with freestone dressings; bitumen - painted slate roof, gabled at ends with crested ridge tiles; 3 stone stacks with stone shafts, principal stack lateral with set-offs. L plan Tudor-style house with a front door in the angle between the blocks. 2 storeys. 1 + 1 window front with regular fenestration of stone mullioned windows, the left hand end projecting and gabled to the front, the right hand block with a gabled dormer. Tudor arched front door with elaborate strap hinges below slated porch canopy in angle between the 2 blocks, the canopy carried on decorated timber brackets springing from stone corbels. 3-light transomed stone ground floor windows with relieving arches. Similar 2-light first floor window left; first floor window right 2-light with a central mullion and transom in the glazing. The elevation facing the school also has an attractive asymmetrical profile and stone windows: a gabled dormer to the left, the projecting stone stack with set-offs and a tall shaft and a 1-light stone window, ground floor right. A grey limestone yard wall at right angles to this elevation has a Tudor arched doorway. A very complete example externally of a small Tudor style C19 house. Interior not inspected but original features may survive.
