4/29 Peamore Cottage and adjoining - garden wall 11.11.52 II

House and adjoining garden wall. Circa late C18/early C19. Brecchia rubble house with slate roofs gabled at ends; main (south) range with end stacks with brick shafts, further stacks to north west and east ranges. Courtyard plan with 4 ranges round an enclosed pitched stone courtyard with water pump and stone trough. Entrance archway to courtyard in the west range. The principal range is the south range, single depth in plan with heated rooms on either side of a central passage with a stair adjacent to the passage. A rear right 1 room plan wing (part of the east range), was probably the kitchen, with a projecting end stack. This wing has been extended to link with the north range which is now in use as flats but may originally have been an unheated service range or outbuildings; the west end stack of the north range is probably an addition. The west range consists partly of accommodation and partly of the archway into the courtyard. South Range 2 storeys and attic. Symmetrical 3-bay south elevation with coped gables at ends and 2 attic dormers. Wide central doorway, partly boarded with C20 front door into passage. Windows in the outer bays have cambered arches and keystones, ground floor windows, 3-light with 12 panes per light, first floor windows similar with 6 panes per light. 2-light casement above front door with rectangular opening, keystone and 6 panes per light. A section of ornamental pitched stones in front of the range contain a date which appears to be 1839. The rear right wing (part of east range) also has a coped gable and window embrasures with keystones. The west range has a large flat-arched doorway with a keystone and voussoirs leading into the courtyard and a 4-light casement above with a cambered arch, keystone and 10 panes per light. Interior: Interior of south range only inspected, stair with stick balusters and turned newel post. A tall rendered cob garden wall with slate capping encloses the garden to the south west and is important to the setting of the house. Peamore Cottage is a picturesque group of buildings with some nice subsidiary features.
