4/44 Pynes Cottages -

GV II

House. Probably late C18. Whitewashed rendered cob with thatched roof hipped at ends; axial stack, right end stack. The present plan is single depth, 3 rooms wide, the end rooms heated with an entrance to right of centre leading into a small lobby in front of the stair. The 2 right hand rooms probably date from a late C18 2 room plan house with a central lobby and stair, possibly with both rooms heated from end stacks. The left hand room may be a former outbuilding which has been incorporated as part of the accommodation and is heated from the former left gable end stack which is now axial. The fireplace in the central room has been blocked. The fenestration of the ground floor right suggests that Pynes Cottage was in use as a shop in the late C19. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front with a C20 front door to right of centre with a flat porch canopy on brackets. The 4 left hand windows of the range are C20 casements, the right hand windows are 4-pane plate glass sashes except for ground floor right which is a 4-light window, 2 panes per light. Interior: The left hand room has exposed cross beams and joists. Wide stair with plank partitions to either side. The roof trusses over the right hand end are collar rafter and pegged, no access to roofspace over left hand end of house. Group value with the Almshouses.
