3/2 The Court -
GV II
Cottage, adjoining linhay and garden wall. Probably C18. Colourwashed rendered cob with thatched roof hipped at ends of main range; end stacks with brick shafts. A thatched linhay with a half-hipped roof adjoins at the left end of the range; a rear right garden wall adjoins the cottage and is adjacent to the road. Single depth cottage, 3 rooms wide with heated rooms on either side of an unheated central section which is subdivided between a stair at the front and small service rooms at the rear. There is a second stair against the rear wall of the left hand room, which is larger than the right hand room which is used as a small shop. The rear wall indicates some rebuilding. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2 window front, the eaves thatch eyebrowed over the first floor windows. 2 entrances on front: one, to left of centre, is a wide C19 plank door giving direct access into the left hand room, the second, on the extreme right has a corrugated iron porch canopy carried on posts and leads into the shop. 2-light C19 casements, 4- and 6-panes per light except for ground floor window right which is a 4-pane fixed window. The rear elevation has 2 first floor C18 casements with square leaded panes. Interior: Exposed cross beams to centre and right hand rooms, boxed in cross beam to left hand room. Some old plank partition walls survive on the ground floor. The principal rafters are straight and the roof construction probably of an C18 date. There has been very little C20 alteration to the interior of the cottage. A 3-bay linhay with loft adjoining at the left end has a rear wall of concrete block. The loft joists are mortised into the vertical posts which have been partly covered with weatherboarding. The colour washed rendered cob garden wall adjoining the rear right corner of the cottage has slate capping. A particularly attractive example of an unspoiled cob and thatch cottage of the region complete with thatched linhay and garden wall.
