SY6683 MILL STREET, Broadwey 873-1/8/447 (South side) 14/06/74 South Mill (Formerly Listed as: MILL STREET, Broadwey Vixen Forge)

GV II

Former mill, now dwellings. C18, upper floor added 1846. Coursed rubble, slate roof. A plain rectangular range with hauling-way towars the left, connected by a bridge to North Mill (qv) opposite. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, scattered fenestration, all to segmental heads with stone voussoirs; at second floor is a late C19 gabled hauling-way with decorative barge-board, above C20 glazed doors to the bridge, and four 2-light cast-iron small-pane casements. At first floor a pair of glazed doors to a C20 balcony railing is flanked by similar cast-iron casements, with a further wood casement to the right. Ground floor has 3 close-set iron casements to the left of a plank door with glazed panel, and, to the right, 2 wide openings over C20 garage doors. To the right is a brick stack, shared with the adjoining Millstream Cottage (qv). The back has a series of regular openings to segmental heads, but with plain casements. INTERIOR: not inspected. HISTORICAL NOTE: this was originally the stables to the main mill building opposite (qv North Mill), raised in the mid C19 to become a further mill unit; the River Wey is culverted beyond the right gable. It is an important element in the street, retaining the original cast-iron casements to the street front, and is a reminder of former industrial activity here by the River Wey.
