1/28 Hole Farmhouse -
- II
House, formerly a farmhouse. Possibly C15, remodelled late C16 or C17; later additions at rear. Roughcast stone or cob. Asbestos slated roof, hipped at right- hand end. 2 storeys, with single-storey addition at rear. Probably a three-room and through-passage plan originally, although it is not certain that the inner room was separate from the hall before circa 1700; probably a kitchen formerly to left of passage, with fireplace in rear wall; hall to right with fireplace backing on to passage. Short rear wing with thick wall to rear of former kitchen, possibly an early addition. 4-window front, but with windows of different sizes and at different levels; 2 C20 wood casement windows to right of second storey and one to right of ground storey, the rest C20. Doorway, off-centre to left, has chamfered lintel with run-out stops; C18/C19 6-panel door, the 2 lowest panels flush. Porch with solid thick side-walls and seat and slated pent roof. Thick, rectangular- section rendered stone chimney of 2 stages rising below ridge of roof (serving hall fireplace). Small semi-circular oven projection in wall to right of porch. Interior has open fireplace in hall with chamfered wood lintel. Chamfered ceiling - beam having run-out stops with bar. Former partition with inner room consisted only of studs halved on to a lightly chamfered ceiling-beam (the slots remain visible). Roof rebuilt C19 or early C20. Other features of interest may be concealed under plaster. The former barn abutting the house on the left and now incorporated into it is said to have had slate inscribed 1811 on gable. Axial chimney stacks in this part of Devon are very rare.
