Details
SK 32 NE PARISH OF MELBOURNE MAIN STREET, KINGS 3/126 NEWTON (south side) King's Newton House and Attached Gates and Outbuildings GV II House and attached gates and outbuildings. C17, altered and extended in early C19 with minor later alterations. Rendered stone with deep stone plinth and hipped slate roof with wide eaves, rendered side wall stacks, and a large rendered ridge stack. Three storeys and three bays, plus large rear addition. Main elevation has a central early C19 bow window with C20 casements, flanked by glazing bar sashes, that to east slightly larger than the other. Below the western sash there is a blocked 2-light recessed and chamfered mullion basement window and between this and the central bow, there is a dip in the plinth and the shadowy evidence of a pedimented doorcase. Above there are three glazing bar sashes and above again there are three similar smaller windows. This storey was probably added in the early C19 as there is a line in the render at sill level. East side of house has an early C19 semi-circular headed doorcase with panelled door, traceried fanlight and a long barrel vaulted porch roof above. Rear elevation has long two storey addition to west with 3-light casements to ground floor and glazing bar sashes above. East side of this elevation has a range of early C19 outbuildings with semi-circular headed doors. One part has a working cheese press and the other has a bread oven and soft water pump. Attached to the east side of these outbuildings is an attractive brick wall with a wide depressed segmental gauged brick arch. Also attached to the east side of the house is a rendered curved stone wall with a pair of large gate piers. These have stipled bases and tooled rustication with pyramidal coping stones to top. Interior has a late C17 dogleg staircase with turned balusters, moulded handrail and ball finials to newel posts. The ground floor has an early C19 character with reeded cornices, semi-circular headed doorcases with flush doors and Hopton Wood marble paving in the hall. There is one C18 fireplace in one of the bedrooms and there is a tiny winder staircase to south side of the large stack.
