CONISTON SD 39 NW 5/60 Tarn Hows Cottage

II

House with outbuilding and ruins of possibly original house. C17 or early C18, part possibly older. Stone rubble with roughcast to front and slate roof. 2 storeys, 3-bay house with 2-bay outbuilding to right and single-storey bay to left. Dripcourses to ground floor windows. Windows are sashed with glazing bars; 1st bay of ground floor has 2-light wood-mullioned fire window. Large gabled porch. 1st bay of outbuilding roughcast; garage door with slated lintel; 2nd bay stone with small entrance, slated lintel. Bay to left has entrance. Cross-axial stack and gable-end stack. Rear has gabled wing with dripcourses; casement windows and entrance. Ruins to right have low wall to front with entrance and signs of blocked window. Gable-end of outbuilding shows roof line of former building, and,has large stone smoke hood with stepped sides and chamfered timber bressummer. Interior has chamfered beams. Property of The National Trust.
