House, now hotel, and outbuilding. Rainwater head dated 1774. Dressed stone with some pebbledash and hipped slate roofs. 3-storey centre of 5 bays has recessed 2-storey, 2-bay wing to left; corresponding wing to right now a ruin; end bays project and have round-headed recesses. Centre has base, band over ground floor and top frieze and cornice. Windows have flat arches and are sashed with glazing bars, those to 2nd floor have vertical glazing bars and horns. Entrance has Tuscan aedicule and half glazed door. Return lateral stacks with flanking rainwater heads. Wing is pebbledashed and has sashed windows with glazing bars, those to ground floor are round-headed. Rear has stair wing under hipped roof, with tall window to centre. Projecting 2-bay gabled wing to left and end bay with horizontally sliding sash with glazing bars to ground floor. Left return has dripcourse and flat-topped porch up steps with wall to yard to right, varied fenestration including small-paned casements. Right return former barn, stables etc., central passageway has ventilation holes to left and stable door and windows to right, with winnowing door and ventilation holes above. Inner return has end bank to barn doors with cat slide pentice and outshut under cat slide roof to right. Loading door over sliding door to right of passageway. Interior of house has cornices and fireplaces to, rooms. Stair has ceiling with Adam-style plaster work; window has stained glass fragments, armorial bearings and religious scene; medieval and C17, possibly some C19. Property of the National Trust, the gift of Beatrix Potter.
