House. Late C16, altered in late C17. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. Main range of 4 bays facing NE, and 2-bay crosswing to left. Original stack to rear of crosswing, 2 C18/C19 stacks in main range, the flues arching together to form one axial stack at roof level. 2-storey extension to rear of crosswing, 2-storey lean-to extension along remainder of rear, one-storey extension to rear of right end, all C18/C19. 2 storeys and attics. 5-window range of early C20 casements, 2 C20 casements in flat-roofed dormers. C19 half-glazed door with dentilled shallow hood. Gambrel roof, half- hipped at both ends. The rear stack has grouped diagonal shafts with truncated octagonal shafts above. The interior has jowled posts, 2 transverse chamfered beams with step stops, one axial beam with double ogee moulding. Mortises for unglazed windows in the rear wall at both ends, now within the right extension. The crosswing has original hearths with depressed brick arches at both levels. Face-halved and bladed scarfs in the wallplates. This house is unusually datable to c.1575, re-roofed in a continuous run in the late C17. In the attic is an unusual wooden pen approx. 2 x 3.50 metres, with open slats to the ceiling, with door and stock-lock, all made with handmade nails and hardwood, probably C19. Its purpose is uncertain, but it may relate to cock-fighting. RCHM 46.
