STONELEIGH 6/268 Stoneleigh Abbey Gatehouse 83 yards to north-west of 11.4.67 Stoneleigh Abbey

GV I

Completed 1346 by Robert de Hockele, 16th Abbot of Stoneleigh Abbey. Red sandstone ashlar. Steeply pitched plain tile roof with gabled ends. Two storeys and attic. The gatehouse consists of entrance way and adjoining coeval hospice to east which was converted and extended further to east into a dwelling- house in early C17. The gatehouse proper has two projecting gabled wings on south side. The principal one on west contains the main entrance way with moulded low centred depressed arches on both faces. Above the entrance arch is a two-light window with transoms and tracery. Some 5ft within the entrance way are 17th century wooden doors. The ceiling is of C16 heavy timber. Adjoining the gateway to east is the dwelling house of which the western portion is part of the original structure. It has on the south side a projecting gabled porch of which the inner door is blocked. Above the porchway is a chamber with a two-light window of tracery. Above again in the gable is a square headed window of two-lights. Access to first floor is by an external staircase of post monastic date, from the head of which a narrow entry leads to a medieval bridge consisting of half arch abutting on the gateway itself and leading to the room on the inner side of it. Early C19 embattled parapet between the two gabled bays of original gatehouse. Remainder of dwellinghouse to east is of C17 date. Doorway with depressed arch and studded plank door. Three square-headed stone mullioned two-light casements at ground and first floors. Two flush gabled dormers with square headed two-light casements. One brick chimney stack at east gable.
