SD 68 SW CASTERTON 16/26 Lodge to Whelprigg (q.v.)

Lodge. Datestone: 1860. Rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and hexagonal-slate roof. 2 storeys, 3 bays, the 3rd bay projects under gable. Coped gables with finials; quoins. Hollow-chamfered-mullioned windows have elliptical-headed lights, some sashed; most have label moulds. Ground floor has 3-light window to 1st bay and 3-light bay window under cornice and hipped roof to 3rd bay. 1st floor has 2-light windows, that to 1st bay under gablet, that to 2nd bay with straight-headed lights; 3-light window to 3rd bay. Entrance in gabled porch with round-arched opening and opening to return. Left return has 3-light window to ground floor and 2-light window above; escutcheon to gable. Right return of 2 bays; 1st bay breaks forward under gable. 3-light windows but 2nd bay of 1st floor has 2-light window under gablet; datestone to gable. Cross-axial stack and rear gable-end stack.
