5 houses. c1760. For Gilpin Sawrey. Roughcast stone with slate roofs.
3 storeys, west with basements, 6 bays, No.5 of 2 bays. Roof lower to Nos.1
and 2 due to slope of ground. Windows are mostly sashed. No.1 has casement
windows and small-paned basement window and entrance, glazed doors. No.2 has
small-paned basement window and entrance, 6-panel doors, 2nd floor casement.
No.3 has basement window, small-paned with pivoted casement. Nos. 4 and 5
lack basement; paired ground floor sashes with single glazing bars, 2nd
floor casements; entrances with 6-panel doors; 2nd bay of No.5 has segmental
arched through passage and sashed windows with glazing bars. Rear retains
tall stair windows with small-paned glazing. Built as part of planned town
square, an unusual feature in a Cumbrian village.
