Details

ROCHESTER MAIDSTONE ROAD TQ 7467 NW 11/173 Nos 157-173 odd (Morden Terrace) GV II Terrace of 9 houses. Second quarter of C19. Brick, part rendered, the ground floor stuccoed throughout. Welsh slate roofs. All houses have rear wings (with end stacks); ridge stacks to main range. 2 storeys. Front: designed as a set piece; symmetrical 4:1:4, the centre house standing forward under a pedimented gable with a flowing trefoil window to gable wall, and the name of the terrace contained within 2 moulded string courses to either side. All houses with 2 1st floor windows under flat arches, plate-glass sashes with margin panes set in reveals. Coped parapet with cornice band. Projecting moulded 1st floor cornice; ground floor of each house with 3 round-headed arches linked by moulded impost band, 2 with hornless sashes (the upper round-headed) with margin panes, the 3rd with fielded panel door under fanlight; paired panelled pilasters; these arches create a continuous rhythm along the entire front. The row is remarkably intact with the exception of No 157 which has a c.1900 shop front (fascia with console brackets) with plate-glass windows but is otherwise as described above (although lacking a cornice band).
