Country house, derelict at time of survey following extensive fire in 1987. Core of c1590 brick house, originally half "H" plan, altered and extended c1655 in the Artisan Mannerist Style with Georgian west front of cl747. Plan now L-shaped. West front of c1747 of brown brick with red brick headers had only southernmost 3 bays of original 9 extant at time of survey, with north and south walls having attached tall brick stacks. West front has rubbed brick heads with cornices, recessed aprons and panelled attic parapet with stone capping. To rear c1655 brickwork of 2 storeys and attics, heavily moulded brick cornice to first floor parapet with 'Dutch' gables. East front has two gables and 2 first floor brick Tuscan pilasters which are thought to be the first examples in Essex. In centre of these is 1747 staircase window. North elevation also has curved gables and 2 storey C19 addition. Interior features include Drawing room to south west with round-headed C17 niche, probably for holding lantern, and C17 spine beam with floor joists, Dining room to south with C17 spine beam and floor joists and Buttery and Kitchen to north with original late Cl6 chimney with open brick arch to Buttery and line of open arch to Kitchen behind later range with remains of C19 spit. To the north are two bread ovens. Buttery retains chamfered cross beams with lambs tongue stops. C19 iron firegrates. Much late C16 brickwork visible. 2. Mid C17 house, with C18 parapet front. Timber-frame and brown brick with red dressings. Red plain tile hipped roof. Two storeys, attics and cellars. 3:3:3 window range double hung vertical sliding sashes with glazing bars. Rubber brick heads with cornices, recessed aprons, panelled parapet with capping. Central 3 windows project slightly. Central window with rusticated brick surround. Four column stucco porch. Seven timber pedimented dormers, central one with segmental pediment. Original end chimney stacks. South elevation has 3 window range, double hung vertical sliding sashes with glazing bars, and C20 red brick bay window. Rear range has mid C17 enriched brickwork. Two storeys and attics, with heavy moulded brick cornice over first floor with parapet and Dutch gables, bearing ornamental panels of brick with date "1655", a coat of arms and initials "R.S.". Red plain tile roof. Large round headed C18 staircase sash window. Internally are C18 panelled rooms, and a C18 staircase. Mid C17 plaster ceilings, one heavily trabeated and with figures of the 4 seasons in oval panels and 2 coats of arms. Painted C17 panelling. (RCHM 2).
