TQ 49 SW CHIGWELL HAINAULT ROAD 4/34 No. 40 (Elces) 20/3/75 GV II

Lobby-entrance house, C17, altered in C18 and C19. Timber framed, facade of stock brick, Flemish bond, weatherboarded elsewhere, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 4 bays aligned approx. N-S, aspect W. Axial chimney stack in second bay from S, forming a lobby-entrance. External chimney stack on N end. 2 adjoining rear wings from the S and the middle of the main block, and a lean- to extension to the N of the latter, forming a catslide roof, C18/19. Lean-to extension around the N end and the remainder of the rear, C19, completing a rectangular plan. 2 storeys. Glazed door and shallow hood, C20, and 3-window range of double-hung sash windows of 4 lights, late C19, under flat brick arches. A wall of more than one-storey height extends the facade to the N to conceal the lean-to extension, with one late C19 casement window. Axial ceiling beams in ground floor rooms, joists plastered to the soffits. On the rear wall, small cast iron pump on brackets, late C19, fluted barrel, manufacturer's emblem of a flag, initials or numerals illegible under many coats of paint.
