Details

STOW MARIES H0GWELL CHASE TQ 89 NW 4/116 Hogwell's Farmhouse ­ II House. Late C17, altered in C19. Timber framed with C19 facade of painted brick in English bond, the remainder plastered, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 3 bays facing W, with approximately central stack forming a lobby-entrance. C19 2-storey lean-to extension along full length of rear, forming a catslide, and C19 external stack to rear. C20 lean-to porch to rear. 2 storeys. 2-window range of C19 casements in segmental arches. 4-panel door in segmental arch. Chamfered transverse beams and plain joists of large vertical section jointed to them with soffit tenons and diminished haunches; in the right bay some joists have been reset. 2 wood-burning hearths. Interior of roof structure not inspected. The name can be traced back to a rental of 1489, when it was 'a tenement and 4 acres', but it is shown as Kings in Chapman and André's map of 1777 (Essex Record Office, D/DK M.138 and D/DB T.260).
